Tourism Excellence Uganda

Preserving Natural and Cultural Heritage

The Tourism Excellence Uganda project was implemented from 2019 to 2021 with the support of Austrian Development Agency, the tour operator Private Safaris, the local partner Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda, as well as representatives of national associations for tour operators (Association of Uganda Tour Operators) and for hotels and accommodations (Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association).

Uganda is renowned for its stunning landscapes, unique biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage, making it a highly attractive destination. Through the Tourism Excellence Uganda project, we contributed to guiding tourism development in a responsible direction, strengthening local value creation, and preserving natural and cultural assets.

Shaping the Future Together

In collaboration with Private Safaris, a specialist brand of DER Touristik Suisse AG, we aim to create positive momentum and develop sustainable tourism offerings in Uganda. Together with our local partner Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda, we are building a local qualification network.

Representatives of the national associations for tour operators (Association of Uganda Tour Operators) and hotels (Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association) are trained in sustainability and quality standards. This enables them to guide their members on the path toward sustainability and, ultimately, certification.

Our Goal – Strengthening Local Structures

The project begins with a train-the-trainer program for Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda and association representatives, equipping them to support tourism businesses in adopting sustainable practices. These newly trained trainers will then deliver workshops and training sessions on sustainability, quality, and service standards for association members, while accompanying selected pilot businesses through the TourCert check and certification process. This empowerment-based approach focuses on strengthening local structures and scaling sustainable tourism practices across the sector.

Our Objectives

Working toward shared goals

Laying the foundation

Together with Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda, we assess the qualification needs of tourism stakeholders and develop a tailored concept. By aligning TourCert and STTA methods and tools, local consultants are trained through train-the-trainer programs to support businesses on their path to certification.

Qualifying and strengthening

The newly trained STTA trainers, in cooperation with TourCert, further train representatives of national associations, Uganda Hotel Owners' Association and Association of Uganda Tour Operators, enabling them to pass on sustainability knowledge to their members.

Sharing knowledge

Together with Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda, association representatives conduct training on sustainability and quality standards for their members and guide selected pilot businesses toward TourCert Qualified status or certification. This is complemented by specialized workshops on forward-looking sustainable product development and a program to strengthen local value creation in cooperation with Private Safaris.

Connecting and Positioning

Participating tourism businesses and associations come together under the label “Excellence Destination Community Uganda” and position Uganda as a sustainable destination in the market. The project fosters networking within the national community and facilitates access to European markets through the international TourCert community, including via an innovative global platform solution.

Sharing and Communicating

Project activities in Uganda are communicated through presentations at events and travel fairs, social media campaigns, workshops on communication for travel agency staff, and targeted press work. In this way, the new sustainable tourism products gain visibility both within Uganda, across the TourCert community, and beyond.
